Last year more than 125 people died on Colorado roads as a result of drunk driving, many of them teenagers. One teen musician and her record company are doing something about it.
Becca Levy is a 13 year old musician from our nation’s capital. She began her singing career when she was nine when she got together with some friends at school and formed a band.
Levy was the lead vocal and the band went on to win three local Battle of the Bands. Levy has also had success as a solo performer. She has performed at the Verizon center and top area venues in the Washington D.C. area such as the 9:30 Club.
Becca writes and records her own material and is a rising star in the world of pop rock. Levy saw what drunk driving was doing to her peers and felt she had to do something about it.
She approached Illumina Records and they developed a campaign called Kids Saving Kids. Nicole Van Eden, the Director of Publicity for Illumina told the Gazette that the goal is not to make it bad to drink and drive, it is to make it cool to not drink and drive.
The campaign is currently taking music submissions from young people 18 years of age or younger until March 30.
According to Van Eden the process is quite simple; the musicians submit their music at ksksubmit@stopddnow.com along with their contact information.
The submission needs to be an original song. Van Eden says they will then take all the submissions and select the top 30 from the entire country.
They will then create a compilation CD complete with artwork and promote it on all the social network sites such as twitter and facebook. They will promote the CD and drive fans to a website where they can download the CD for free. At this page the viewer will be given drunk driving prevention information, links and posters.
In the past two years Illumina has released two compilation CDs in Colorado, “Colorado Rockers” and “Colorado Hip Hop for Life”. This campaign is open to all genres of music.
